Carlo Rubbia

Carlo Rubbia was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics 1984 together with Simon van der Meer for work leading to the discovery of the W and Z particles at CERN.

His current research activities are concentrated on the problem of energy supply for the future, with particular focus on the development of new technologies for renewable energy sources.

He is Scientific Director of the Institute for Advanced Sustainability Studies in Potsdam, Germany, and member of the high-level
Advisory Group on Energy and Climate Change set up by EU’s President Barroso in 2007.

Between 1999 and 2005, he was President for National Agency for New Technologies, Energy and the Environment (ENEA), an Italian Government sponsored research and development agency. During Rubbia’s term as President he developed a new method for concentrating solar power at high temperatures for energy production, known as the Archimede Project, which is presently being developed by industry for commercial use.
